LOOKING FOR SOMETHING TO SHOOT? Here's a list of photo opportunities and and upcoming events within driving distance of Tulsa, Oklahoma. If you know of a good Photo op please let us know. email photoops@cameragallery.com

Looking for a place to shoot? About 60 north of Tulsa is just a treasure of a photo op; a place called Woolaroc. Back in Oil's heyday Frank Phillips (as in Phillips Petroleum) had more money than you can imagine and he built an incredible getaway for his family and friends(the Rockefellers, Henry Ford, etc.) in the rolling hills of Osage County, west of Bartlesville.

Today the place is a museum and a wildlife sanctuary www.woolaroc.org The museum, park, lodge, etc. is in the center of the wildlife sanctuary. You drive through herds of Bison(buffalo as we call'em down here), deer, horses, emus, ostriches, elk, etc., etc. to get to the inner park. While you can't pet the animals...the animals are very nonchalant about humans. And as with most drive through sanctuaries, you can't get out of your vehicle. However...the park security seems to have no problem with people shooting (cameras) from the back of a pickup truck. Which of course is the way it's been done for years on wildlife safari's. The back of the truck view gives you 360 degrees of view and you're not shooting through tinted, bug-splattered glass.

Woolaroc seems to be made for photographers. Along with the wildlife and scenic stuff there are native stone buildings, many bronze sculptures, a watch tower, lakes, stone bridges, flower beds, ornate bird houses, an oil derrick and more in the park itself. When you need a break from the outside stuff you can step inside the 1920's log lodge (now air-conditioned)and shoot some more.

Woolaroc is also nice in that family members not interested in taking pictures (or watching you take pictures) can enjoy their day checking out the museum and gift shop.

Sunsets; When it gets really dry and hot...is when we get a lot of dust and pollution in the atmosphere, which can result in those beautiful, deep, red-ball of fire sunsets.
Photos Safari If you are interested in a serious photo safari, Doug Henderson, a Tulsa-based commercial photographer is taking a group of photographers to the jungles of Ecuador this fall. More information is available from Camera Gallery or Doug's website; www.douglashenderson.com
